Some history of Torremolinos
Torremolinos has a long and varied history, as attested by the numerous Phoenician, Greek, Roman and Arab vestiges found in the area. The first written chronicles of Torremolinos date from 1489, the date on which the Catholic Monarchs decided to impose repopulation on the area known up to this point as Torres de Pimentel. Years afterwards in 1502 control of the village passed to the capital Malaga. This coastal enclave built various castles and watchtowers for its own defence. The Castle of Santa Clara, dating from the 18th century, was one of the most important found in the area.
The greatest changes experienced in Torremolinos came from about the middle of the 20th century when this fishing village discovered the enormous tourism potential offered by its extesive coastline and its benign climate. Since then, Torremolinos has transformed itself into one of the focal points of tourism on the Costa del Sol thanks to an important range of tourist services and the quality of its infrastructure.
